The Ayawilca zinc mineralization also contains an often-overlooked element that has the potential to add significant value to the project - indium. The Zinc Zone mineral resource contains an estimated 2,600 tonnes of indium in indicated resources and an additional 1,400 tonnes of indium in inferred resources. The indium is intimately associated with the zinc mineralization at Ayawilca and reports to the zinc concentrate. Indium is recovered by zinc smelters in Asia and Canada, although not all smelters around the world are capable of recovering it. It should be noted that while indium is reported in the Ayawilca mineral resource, in the 2024 PEA indium was given no value. This short article explores the critical role indium plays in the technology sector, especially in mobile phone screens and other touch screens, flat screen TVs and solar panels in the form of indium tin oxide or ITO.
Economic Significance of Indium
Indium is used primarily in the hi-tech industry particularly in the production of ITO. Indium essentially is a transparent conductor on touch screens - the ITO is layered as a very thin microfilm on the glass of mobile phones and other touch screens to make the screens conductive. Like all commodities indium prices fluctuate, rising and falling with supply and demand, but during the first half of 2024 indium metal prices have doubled to around US$400 per kg. As industries continue to innovate and expand their use of indium-based technologies, new sources of indium (such as Ayawilca) may become increasingly important to meet the growing demand.

China is the largest producer of indium, followed by South Korea, Japan, and Canada. Supply Chain Security: With most of the world's indium supply concentrated in a few countries, geopolitical risks can disrupt the supply chain. Technological Sovereignty: As nations push for technological sovereignty and seek to reduce dependence on foreign sources for critical materials, the development of domestic or regional sources of indium becomes increasingly important.
